Introduce the way you are tying the concept of technology to society.

Journal Entries

. Each entry should be between 200 and 1000 words. Journals should be submitted to the assignment folder.

The purpose of the journals is for you to think about things that happen in your everyday lives in a way that connects with our course topic. Your journal should contain the types and number of entries mentioned above. The entries ought to be long enough to sustain “deep” thoughts (200-1000 words). The journals need to contain reflections on topics that intersect your course directly or tangentially. They should not be connected with the textbook (that is what the quizzes are for). When writing about articles, TV, or movies, write about the ideas, do not summarize—I want your ideas. If an entry is not about technology and society or is connected to the textbook, you will not receive any credit for that entry.

The sources used for these journals should be cited in APA format.

They should also follow standard writing format with a clear thesis/main idea in an introduction paragraph that is then supported in subsequent paragraphs with examples and analysis.

Here are some specific suggestions for the Journals:

  1. Try to keep up with technology issues by watching relevant science and technology programming on Discovery Channel, PBS, CNN, etc.
  2. Many sci-fi movies focus on issues of our use of technology (Alien Resurrection, the Matrix movies, Star Trek movies, Forbidden Planet, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Blade Runner, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc.). So, you could write about them, too. Not all movies are about technology although all use technology. The same goes for television shows.
  3. Check out the Internet. Type in “Technology and Society” on your search engine, you should get plenty of hits.
  4. Keep up with science and technology in the Washington Post. Also, check magazines like Scientific American, Wired, Discover, etc.

Journal and Discussion Post Format

Have 5 paragraphs.

Introduction- Introduce the way you are tying the concept of technology to society.  It is a great idea to name the group most affected in our sicety by the technology.  The introduction should end with your thesis which is the main idea of what you are writing.  You should never cite your thesis, this is your point, not something that comes from research!

Point one that supports that thesis

Point two that supports that thesis

Point three that supports that thesis

Conclusion- Restate the thesis in conclusive terms.  Please do not introduce a new idea in your conclusion.

All Journals and Discussion posts have to be cited in APA format for full credit.  Please do not use MLA or Chicago format.  There should never be footnotes or the words “Work Cited” in APA format!  The reason we use APA format is this is a class in the social sciences which only uses APA format.

All end references are titled “References” in APA format

There are always in-text citations that correspond to end references

In-text citation should be in the format (author, year) format at the end of the sentence where you have used the source.  You only add a page number to that in-text citation for a direct quote.

Limit your direct quotes to less than 10% of your paper.  More than this is often considered plagiarism.  If you use a quote, please make sure it is cited in the text.

End references should always have a corresponding in-text citation.

End references are always alphabetized.

End references are in a basic format (for this course).  See below for the format.  Remember, punctuation makes a difference!
