Learner’s Journal: Entry #3

In this week’s media, Stephen Brookfield and the adult learning practitioners explained that leadership is a core skill for adult educators. In this journal entry, reflect on the concept of leadership and how it applies to you. Consider the following questions:

  • Why are leadership skills important to you as an aspiring or practicing adult educator?
  • How do/would you demonstrate leadership in your specific adult education setting?
  • What have you learned from educators you have encountered in the past who embraced the leadership role?

Provide examples from your personal experience and/or citations from relevant sources to illustrate your points.

Note: Please continue to keep a running list of any vocabulary, acronyms, scholars’ names, etc. that are new to you or that you think are especially important.

As explained by Mumford, Campion & Morgeson (2007), leadership skills are important to an aspiring adult educator in many ways that include the following. To start with, having excellent leadership skills make it easier for an individual to interact with others positively, even in instances where other people may be stressed in one way or another. A good adult instructor should try his or her level best to bring a lesson in manner that motivates the learner no matter how difficult or complex the lesson is.
