Charles Darwin’s sociobiological theory of natural selection stated that the best or stronger species would continue to evolve and the weaker ones would become extinct. Eugenicists used Darwin’s theory as a basis or even justification to further its cause. Eugenics refer to a set of ideas and practices that are aimed at improving the quality of the genetics of the human species (Barrett & Kurzman, 2004). Eugenicists held that the human race can become better through controlled breeding. Before Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, the U.S. practiced forced sterilizations as a measure to eliminate handicaps or illnesses.
