You have read a variety of newspaper commentaries. Now it’s your turn to write your own. Write a persuasive Op-Ed about a civic issue with the intention that it would be published in one of the following publications: The San Diego Union-Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, or the Daily Aztec. You need to have a personal connection to the topic and your connection must be integrated into your essay.

What authority do I have about this topic?
How much outside support will I need?
How important is this subject to me?
It may seem like odd advice, but the topic you are most passionate about may NOT be a good one for this assignment. If you are unable to respectfully view your addressee or ideas contrary to yours on the subject, it’s probably not a good choice.
