Question: Gerard Baker is the first American Indian to be Superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Discuss your thoughts on the inclusion of American Indian history and culture, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. In other words, to what extent should Native American history be interpreted in our national parks? What, specifically, should tourists be exposed to in terms of Native American history?

The primary purpose of establishing and interpreting parks is to communicate the natural and the historical significance of the parks to the public. Tourists visiting Mount Rushmore may be expecting to hear the story of the four presidents carved in the stones, but some tourists find the feeling of inspiration that hits them without their expectation upon arrival at the park. The establishment of Mount Rushmore National Memorial is regarded as a symbol of America’s greatest achievements. The inclusion of American history is a symbol of healing to some of the included natives since they formed part of the history. The interpretation of the Native American history should be to the achievement of freedom that the four presidents carved in the mountains played a crucial role in as well as the story of the American Indians that lived in the area…….
