Pandemic Flu Case Analysis

Peruse the Pennsylvania Pandemic Flu Plan. No disaster plan is without flaws or weaknesses. Based on your knowledge of disaster mitigation and response, as well as your knowledge of public health, design a tool which could be used by the PA DOH as an instructional guide to their county offices on how they plan to handle an influenza pandemic. As part of this guide, present at least 5 weaknesses or potential weaknesses that you find here. Additionally, comment on how and why personnel in county public health offices may be overwhelmed during a pandemic and what tasks they would have to address to assist in response to and mitigation of the disaster.

The format you use for the case analysis you can prepare it in a more narrative, report-type format (something ~6-8 pages should cover it).

A disease pandemic is described as the sudden outbreak of infection in more than one location that attacks the populations by causing sudden and severe illnesses in all the demographics of the affected communities. An influenza pandemic is a rare occurrence in the world with only three incidences in the past three centuries and one in the United States where an estimated 450,000 deaths were recorded. While vaccines remain the most effective remedy for the influenza virus, it is challenging for disaster management and public health officials to contain its spread because the immunization is ineffective for the new strain. According to Brown et al. (2011), the current vaccines are only designed to protect against the previous strains of the virus that was responsible for past epidemics. Therefore, the existence of an effective and comprehensive response and management plan is important for the country or states to handle the adverse impacts of the disease outbreak on the population……..
