This paper is very difficult to parse; on a writing level, as well as on an analytical level. Partially, this is because a few key terms are undefined and unexplained (what is the environment?, e.g.). As a consequence, the core claims of the paper are very opaque; it seems as if the paper is arguing that polarization is the result of disagreement, or that polarization causes disagreement? But, polarization is, fundamentally, a form of disagreement about politics. The paper does draw on a substantial number of peer reviewed papers, but the findings of these papers are not communicated and don’t seem synthesized into a coherent causal story.
