Please read this PBS Newshour column, “When To Quit, from an Expert on Grit,” and then respond to the following questions:

  • Duckworth defines grit as “passion and perseverance for long-term goals.” Describe an actual example of grit from your own life or the life of someone you know personally. (Make sure to include what the person was passionate about and how perseverance was demonstrated.)
  • In the article, Duckworth explains that in some situations, quitting can be the best choice, because “your energy will be better spent on a different low-level goal that accomplishes the same end.” From your own life or the life of someone you know personally, share an example of when quitting or changing direction was a good decision.

Success in various activities does not always come easy, particularly in cases where one has limited resources among those necessary to achieve the said objective. However, the amount of personal investment in the activity steers an individual towards doing whatever is necessary to make the said achievement. In some cases, the chances of success could be limited, but constant persistence determines the ultimate outcome of the investment in the said objective. The case was especially true for Joe, who developed an interest in football while he was in the fourth grade, and would always ride his bicycle to my home every Sunday to watch the game with my family. Joe lived with his mother, who often complained that the number of resources needed to invest in the game reduced the chances for Joe ever playing football. Scouts from colleges hardly visited his school, which further limited the chances that anyone would spot him in the field……………..
