This is called a peripheral vascular complication/disease, PVD. Pregnancy stresses the heart and the entire circulatory system. The blood volume of a pregnant woman increases by thirty to fifty percent to nourish the fetus, meaning the percentage of blood pumped by the heart per minute increases by fifty to fifty percent from normal. The heart during pregnancy, therefore, is overworked. During labor and delivery, abrupt changes are also experienced in blood pressure and flow.
