This week we reviewed the concept of plagiarism, and the ethical issues associated with using content on the Internet.

  1. After researching, define the word “plagiarism” in your own words.
  2. Provide an example of how someone could plagiarize another person’s work in an assignment without realizing it.
  3. Describe at least two (2) ways you can ensure that your work is free of plagiarism.

Plagiarism is a serious academic offense and an ethical concern. Plagiarism is used to refer to using the work of someone else without acknowledging it. Plagiarizing work, therefore, involves behaviors that include using the work of other people and passing them as one’s ideas in class assignments, research projects, and exams among other cases (Park, 2003).

People plagiarize work without knowing when they use the ideas of other people in their assignments. For instance, a person can paraphrase the ideas of other authors and fail to acknowledge the authors of the original ideas. Such cases are plagiarism (Park, 2003). However, because the person has not used the exact words as was in the work of the first author, they may fail to realize that they are plagiarizing the work. Therefore, such people are likely to face the consequences of plagiarism because of their ignorance rather than intent……
