This week, we are focusing on how music transitioned from what we know as the Classical Period (1750-1820), to the Romantic Period (1820-1900). We will do this through a music critique of a work from Beethoven, who is known to be the composer who “built the bridge” from the Classical Period to the Romantic Period. You will want to notice the dynamics (volume), Instruments, tempo (speed) and the emotion of the music. You will be critiquing the first few minutes of Beethoven’s “Fifth Symphony”. I have included the link to the music. Please feel free to mention biographical details that may have contributed to the composition of Beethoven’s music.

Opera has long been important to the study of Music History. For this assignment, you will explain the importance of opera during the Baroque, Classical and Romantic Periods. (The Romantic Period was a real “heyday” for opera. The art of creating opera had exploded and would now include subgenres, such as exotic opera).
Once again, you will need to write about 150 words and provide properly cited references. (Three paragraphs of 50 words each will work nicely).

The names of these musicians may be familiar to you, but their lives may not be. You will want to examine the years and countries in which they were born, the impact their respective fathers had on them, the age they started performing and the instruments they play.
