A poet has written that his work, like music, is meant to be enjoyed, not analyzed. “Its proper meaning is found in the full experience of reading or hearing it, nothing more — and nothing less,” he says. Explain why you agree or disagree with this poet’s opinion. Would it matter that this poet has published his poem for the larger world to read? Who, then, owns the meaning of a poem if it has been published to a larger world? At what point does the interpretation of a poem “belong” to the poet, and at what point does it “belong” to the reader?

I agree with the poet’s opinion. Poetry is a unique artistic product. It is the exclusive creation of the poet. It finds its expression within the words and more importantly; meanings ascribed to it by the poet; and no other person. Enjoying poetry therefore comes from an appreciation of the experience of its expression.
Poetry is beautiful for its ingenuity. It has the capacity to mean what the words making them would not mean in ordinary parlance. When a poet writes, his work assumes the expression that he or intends to create. This is how stylistic devices such as sarcasm and even suspense find validity in literature (Womelsduff, 2005). The poet uses his words in a way that is distinctly his own. As one reads therefore, it is like that person immerses oneself into the poet’s world.
