Quality Improvement Initiative to Curb Sepsis

Sepsis is a very serious issue in the healthcare system. Therefore, quality improvement initiatives aiming at curbing sepsis in the healthcare environment may be very important in the protection of lives, reduction of morbidity, and also the costs of care. Early recognition of sepsis may help reduce the effects of sepsis on the patients and therefore save the institution money (Howell & Davis, 2017). Medicare and Medicaid are switching to quality-driven reimbursement and therefore, preventing sepsis and other HAI is important. Therefore, reducing the events of sepsis may be very important in the current healthcare environment.

The quality improvement initiative should target nurses because nurses are the professionals that work most closely with patients and, therefore, should be the ones who are most prepared to identify sepsis and initiate initiatives to prevent its spreading. While conducting the initiatives, the institution should consider its benefits and weigh against the costs to see its importance. An institution that has low cases of sepsis is more likely to attract more patients and save all stakeholders time and money (Paul et al., 2018). The initiative to reduce sepsis through early identification should be a collaboration among all stakeholders. However, the people that should be targeted most are the nurses and the physicians. Nurses should be prepared to educate the patients and their families about what sepsis is and how it can spread in the environment if people are not vigilant. Nurses should be trained to be able to involve comprehensive processes like patient education, early identification, and the cleaning of the healthcare environment to ensure that they protect their patients.
