Choose one of the two primary sources to analyze, by

Part 1-Identify

Title & Date written or published & Author who created the document & type of document (eg. letter, travelogue, diary, government document, newspaper article or editorial?)

Part 2 – Context (roughly 1-2 paragraphs)

1) Place the document within its historical context using your background knowledge and information from the course.

2) Provide facts and information about the historical context that help us access how reliable the source is, and explain how they do or do not cast doubt on its reliability.

3) Make connections across time and place, and connect the document to specific themes, topics, and examples from the course lectures and readings: What does the document help us understand about world history? What larger patterns, developments, or series of events does document reflect or provide an example of? How can the document help you understand those patterns, their causes, and their effects better?

Part 3 – Analysis (1-2 paragraphs)

1) Audience: Who was meant to read this document?

2) What was the purpose of or intention behind the production of the document?

3) Content/Message: What information does this document provide? If it makes an argument or arguments, what is the main argument?

4) What does this document tell you about the author? What can you learn about the author and their perspective or views from this document?

5) What does this document tell you about the place and time in which it was produced?

For “Context” and “Analysis,” do NOT simply write out answers each of the questions; address as many of them as you can, but contextualize and analyze your source in paragraph form.

Cite the essays by Overmyer-Velázquez and Morgan, to draw parallels or highlight differences across space and time.
