Over the course of the semester we have read a number of essays which consider the nature of

photographic representation. Some of these writers have either mentioned or argued in favor of a form

of idealism in which the camera aspires to greater heights of artistic representation, while others prefer

the medium to capture the natural world and convey a more documentary approach to viewers via

realism. Considering one of these two positions, either “idealism” or “realism,” write an argumentative

paper based on 2-3 of the essays listed above from our course readings.

In this essay, you will first summarize a position based on citations from these authors in order to

determine your own informed position on what either “idealism” or “realism” means in terms of

photography. Consider how we have constructed They Say / I Say arguments in class as well as in your

own writing responses and close reading of these texts. So, your first step is to skillfully summarize and

establish for your reader what some of these authors have said about the term you selected. Second,

given that these writers contemplate a form of visual representation prior to the digital age of

photography, you will dedicate half of your essay to exploring what “idealism” or “realism” means in

terms of the medium today. Respond to what these thinkers have said about photography in the past

with your own informed approach in the present. For both aspects of your paper, be sure to include a

total of 2-4 photographs as evidence to support your claims.

As a reminder, this paper should demonstrate a complete argument which includes a title that reflects the

content of your essay, as well as supporting paragraphs and a conclusion
