#1 Recall a situation in which you experienced Conflict. Provide a brief description of the situation and define the Type of Conflict you experienced.
Interpersonal Conflict-
I experienced a situation in which I was involved in an interpersonal conflict at my job. I was charting on the computer charting system on one of the patients that I was assigned to, while a family was circling the unit with their baby. The baby started to vomit in the hallway while I was sitting there, but one of the nurses on the unit quickly went to assist the patient. The charge nurse walked out of his office at the end of the incident and assumed that I was ignoring the patient and their needs. However, he did not know that a nurse went to the clean supply room to get towels, and a burp cloth to assist the patient. The charge nurse then later pulled me to the side and began to yell at me inappropriately. During the conversation, I did not engage at all or express the nature of the incident to the charge nurse. At that moment I felt bombarded by his words and his attitude so I did not know how to properly and professionally respond to him. This caused him to grow even more angry and he started to target me at work. He then asked to have another conversation to me in which I did describe to him what happen, however, he was not satisfied with my response. He later used this confrontation as an example of carelessness in my evaluation at work.
#2 In the communication process during this situation of conflict, identify the Ineffective Communication behaviors that occurred and explain why they were ineffective in resolving the conflict.
Some of the factors that were relevant in the ineffective communication that was taking place during this particular conflict were the non-communication on my end, the attitude and verbiage that was being used by the charge nurse, and the use of power or sense of entitlement by the charge nurse. It is important to communicate effectively in any conflict, but it is especially important to communicate effectively in the work environment and therefore expressing your concerns or your point of view to ensure that the other party is aware of the situation. I did not communicate effectively because I chose not to engage when the charge nurse approached me initially. This was an issue of ineffective communication behaviors and therefore it would have been more effective to communicate with the charge nurse at the initial cause of the incident. The charge nurse utilized his power and sense of entitlement to belittle and manipulate the situation. He was very aggressive with his wording and his attitude toward me. The conflict could have been less ineffective if the approach from the charge nurse was different from the beginning. This could have also had an impact on my initial reaction, attitude, and communication toward the charge nurse.
#3 In this situation, how could you have been more assertive in dealing with the conflict? Include information from the video and link on Assertiveness.
I could have been more assertive from the beginning by acknowledging the initial concern of the charge nurse and communicating that what he witnessed, was not actually what happened. I should have stated my view in an assertive yet professional manner without using aggression or aggressive words.
