Part Two: Which of the characters this week did you feel the most sympathy for? Who did you most identify with? Why? Who did you feel the least sympathy for? Why?
Part Three: In “The Open Boat,” lines of philosophy about man’s fate and his reward for trying hard are repeated throughout. Quote a line of this story that stands out to you as expressing something philosophical about life. Do you agree with the statement? Why or why not?

“Paul’s Case” is a short story, written by Willa Cather about a young man who was unhappy about his current social status. Cather used the character of Paul to depict the efforts of people in the working class group to elevate their social status. Paul only appreciated the beauty of his imaginary world that contained “elements of artificiality” that was “necessary for beauty” (Cather 150). An opportunity to travel to New York at the expense of his employer, Denny & Carson, provided an escape, in his opinion, from the “dull gowns” of unfashionable women and the “prosy men who never frock coats”. The vacation was a dream come true for Paul until the “eighth day” when he realized that he had run out of funds…
