As a healthcare provider, establishing a helping hand and healing relationship with your patient and their families is the most important. This is accomplished by building a solid foundation with each patient by being genuine, showing empathy, earning the patient’s trust, and listening to the patient. Proper communication skills such as speech, listening strategies, and non-verbal cues such as eye contact and body mechanics can assist the patient’s understanding and information processing of their health concerns. Health professionals who practice with empathy informed collaborative choice, and patient involvement builds an extensive practice and repours with the community (Mata et al., 2021). Developing a professional partnership with my health care team will take trust between me, the provider, and the team. This can be done by understanding how I, as the provider, care for my patients and how we all work together for the common good of the patient. Effective teams that work together provide excellent care at the ground level of the organization, the team itself, the individual team member, and the patient (Paediatr, 2018). When looking at myself and my behaviors, biases, and attitudes, I may need to work on patience or tolerance for individuals that do not want to help themselves even when given the resources to follow thru. As a new provider, I will encounter this patient daily who has not followed up with a recommendation of myself as their provider, other medical professionals, or even their own family. I must learn to still listen to them, help them to my best ability as their provider and give an equal, high standard of care regardless of what they do when they leave my office. In healthcare, we need to remember what bias means. According to FitzGerald and Hurst, “To full fill the goal of delivering impartial care, healthcare professionals should be wary of any negative evaluation they make that is linked to membership of a group or a particular characteristic” (FitzGerald & Hurst, 2017, p. 18). These biases can be detrimental to the provider’s practice, the team, and the patient. As a nurse of 19 years, when I think about biases toward a patient, I always stop and remind myself. I started this journey to help others, although it doesn’t seem like it at times. I provide trust, empathy, and my oath of patient-centered care to all without bias, attitudes, or inappropriate behaviors despite the fact the patient may be non-compliant with their health.
