  • What has since happened to Takata? Who will pay the estimated $1.6 billion in fines and associated penalties caused by the exploding inflators? From a strategic perspective, what did Takata do wrong? On learning of possible mechanical defects in the airbag system, what might you have recommended to the CEO of Takata? Hi there! Here are the other students answers that I need the replies to:

Student 1-

According to a CNN article, the Takata Corporation’s recall on airbags will last up to 2023. This is apart of the criminal settlement with the US Department of Justice. Takata has agreed to pay $125 million to the victims. Also, the company has pleaded guilty and will pay the total amount of fines and penalties. The company used cheaper material for airbags. Then the company tried to cover up the mistakes. The company committed fraud and manipulated test results from testing the airbags. The airbags were the cause of death for many people. The cover-up made it so much worse.

I would recommend to the CEO of Takata is to not be greedy. Businesses fail because of someone’s greed. Covering up the issues with the airbags made it a crime. Also, the company should’ve made sure all airbags were recalled. In situations like this its the companies job and duty to make sure customers aware of the recall of products. The recall should’ve been the top of the to-do list. The CEO should have made sure every owner of their car has the airbags to be contacted immediately. Emails, alerts, and mail should have been sent out to all customers. If the CEO failure to accept my recommendation I would have contacted news companies. I would have done anything to get the story out about the airbags.

Takata was sold to Key Safety Systems which is part of a Chinese auto parts supplier based in Michigan (Kiley, 2018).Key Safety Systems will bought Takata for 1.6 billion (Kiley, 2018), so the 1.6 billion in fines will most likely came from the sale of Takata.Until the recall and replacement program is complete Takata will still continue to operate the airbag inflator operation due to a mandate (Kiley, 2018).Takata used a chemical compound called ammonium nitrate that over time deteriorates especially in places like the inside of a car from closed windows and sunlight due to temperatures (Kiley, 2018). I would suggest that Takata alert car makers of the defects immediately to begin the recall before more problems arise, and also suggest more R&D be put into the process before deeming a product safe. Most cars are built to last 7 years, but with people repairing cars and engines lasting longer most cars are on the road for longer. A product should be tested for a least double the amount of time of expected use.If the car is built to last 7 years than safety products should last at least 14 years, and warning stickers should state this.If the CEO refused to accept my solution I would demand to know what solution was acceptable, if that solution was not an action that I would consider acceptable I would report the CEO to the appropriate authorities.
