Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter recounts the spiritual experiences of a married woman called Hester Prynne in a little Puritan village close to Boston, MA. Hester is regarded as an outcast when she has a baby out of wedlock during at a time when her husband is absent. Hester is made to wear a big, scarlet letter ‘A’ as punishment for her adultery. It takes the actions of Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale to keep the mother and her young daughter together. But the story takes a tragic, tumultuous turn when Hester’s husband returns secretly. She redeems herself to the community over several years. She confronts the lover and the husband over the horrible facts relating to their emotional failures, and becomes, ultimately, an inspiring, rehabilitated woman before her death. Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter captures the hypocrisies and limitations of the 16th century Puritan United States………
