Today, Japan supports a successful democracy. The first of its kind in East Asia. It has seen rapid economic growth into the 1980s before stalling in the 1990s. However, Japan is ethnically homogeneous and highly nationalistic. 1) Discuss why Japan was able to build a successful democracy, 2) identify key differences between Japanese democracy and British & US democracy and 3) discuss whether you believe Japan’s economic success led to increased democracy or whether an increase in democratic capacity led to increased economic performance.

The transformation of Japan leadership from one of authoritarian imperialist to democratic pacifist regarding world affairs is one of the most remarkable transitions in the last century. The manifestation of the modern Japanese democracy did not take place smoothly. Japan was well known as a militaristic and imperialistic country in the past that was later defeated by the two atomic bombs dropped by the United States. The first attempt of democratization was sparked by the Western threat that was aimed at reversing the military coup that had shaped Japan into a militaristic an imperialistic country (Schulman, 2008). Japan is the first non-Western country to achieve civil liberties and prosperities making it level with the other stable countries thus becoming a role model for the developing countries. The contributing factor to the success of Japanese democracy is the acceptance from the people who genuinely and enthusiastically supported the new constitution. The Japanese people had gone through terrible experiences in the past including repression and suffering…………..
