Role of RN and APRN in Policy-Making
Nurses have a major role in enhancing the care delivery and patient outcomes. Policy-making is one of the approaches that registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) use to influence care. When registered nurses participate in policy-making, they influence the health stakeholders’ decision and issues related to patient care through advocacy, political knowledge, and collaboration with other members of the nursing fraternity (Williams et al., 2018). There are various opportunities for registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses to participate in policy-making such as joining professional nursing organizations.
Various opportunities for RNs and APRNs to influence care delivery through policy exist. Nurses may participate in policy-making by joining professional nursing organizations, for example, American Nurses Association (ANA). Nursing professional organizations present opportunities for RNs and APRNs to lobby for nursing issues and advocate for healthcare policy. Secondly, nurses can actively participate in policy making by leveraging their leadership skills and push for shared governance models (Marymount University, 2021). Shared governance models in independent facilities present the RN and APRNs an opportunity to influence decisions regarding their nursing practice.
Various factors hamper the process of nurses actively engaging in policy-making. Low education levels are a major issue hampering nurses’ enrollment and participation in professional organizations. For example, to sit in policy development boardrooms for ANA, a nurse would require a doctor of nursing practice degree (DNP). Lack of the prerequisite knowledge and skills to push for shared governance models is another issue hampering active participation in policy-making (Rasheed et al., 2020). To influence decisions regarding care, nurses must be adept in their areas of profession and have the necessary experience. To solve these issues, nurses should leverage their leadership skills such as through leading community and local facility initiatives to gain knowledge and experience (Marymount University, 2021). Secondly, RNs and APRNs should focus on advancing their careers through pursuing higher education such as through pursuing DNP programs.
