Introduction

The Enlightenment era that spanned from the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth centuries was a period for thinkers to scrutinize the ideas and philosophies used for running society and maintaining social relations intensely. These thinkers that consist of historians and social theorists examined the link between the political and social development in the context of the liberty and equality enjoyed by the people. Also, it was a thought process that was defined by the extent of the relationship between the individual and the state, which served as the basis for the development of the ideologies that influenced the political revolutions in the Atlantic colonies of the European empires. While the thoughts emphasized the inherent capabilities of people and their rights under the social contract among them, the primary objectives of the thinkers was the development of societies that are subscribe to this notion.
