Child and youth offending make juvenile interaction with the criminal justice system inevitable. Accordingly, the law recognizes and makes a clear distinction between adult and juvenile offenders and the criminal justice system endeavors to accommodate the unique circumstances that often underlie juvenile offending through providing special protections for minors.  However, the video by CSU-Global Multimedia Team relaying Richard’s interaction with the criminal justice system casts aspersions on the adequacy of these safeguards. Richard’s story raises concerns regarding the propriety of charging juvenile offenders as adults, the viability of due process and fair trial safeguards for minors, and the effect of extensive media publicity to sensitive juvenile offenses.
