In our class, we have covered a wide span of American history. From the period before European contact through the first presidential administrations, we have seen dramatic changes in American society.
In our current political period, we are also seeing tremendous change, political division, violence, and conflict. I would like you to consider what leads to significant and measurable change in the historical periods we are examining.
You may select any single history event that we have examined in our class, including major cultural shifts, economic policies, political movements, intellectual philosophy, wars or social shifts, that interests you and consider the changes in American society that resulted from the event you selected. This is essentially an essay asking you to consider the effects of change (not the causes) so make sure to focus your paper in this way.
Use your lecture notes and assigned class readings to support your essay. You are not required to do outside research, but you may include scholarly sources if you would like. These sources may not come from generic, non-peer reviewed websites, but must come from academic texts (you can find such sources through the online library databases).
If you have any questions about the viability of your topic or if you want to show me your thesis statement, please email me. If you want me to look at an outline of your paper or a complete/incomplete draft, please also set this up with me via email – I am happy to do it if you work this out and give me enough time.
This paper should be between 4-6 pages, typed, double-spaced, in MLA or Chicago format, and with standard margins. A works cited change is only required if you use outside sources.
