Select a song, image or film that addresses a historical subject

Select a song, image or film that addresses a historical subject.  Please review the instructions for the proposal for your type of source; you are advised to select a source for which you are able to provide all the information requested.  Please be sure to follow the directions for your source (song, image or film) for each assignment.  Your selection must be approved by the instructor at the proposal stage.  Please see the syllabus for the point value and due date for each assignment.

Proposal

The proposal should be 1-2 pages, double-spaced.

 

If you are doing a song, include the following:

• The title and singer of the song
• The year and place the song was released
• The song lyrics
• Relevant background information about the singer: Be sure to demonstrate how the biographical details you provide relate to the song.  For example, if the song is anti-war, you should discuss the artist’s political views and activities.
• The historical context of the song: For example, if the song was released in 1980, explain the major events and developments at the time.  Be sure to explain how the events or developments you identify influenced the song’s message.
• Identify and explain the historical subject addressed in the song.
• Explain how the song portrays the historical subject referenced in the song: Is the song critical or praiseworthy?  Does it give a positive or negative impression?  Does it provide only one side of the story, or does it strive to offer a balanced picture?  Be sure to point to specific details in the song’s lyrics to support your interpretation.
• In one sentence, state what you think is the song’s message.

 

If you are doing an Image, include the following:

• The title and artist of the image
• The year and place the image was produced
• The publication within which the image appeared
• A copy of the image
• Relevant background information about the artist and publication: Be sure to demonstrate how the biographical details you provide relate to the image.  For example, if the image is anti-war, you should discuss the artist’s political views and activities.
• The historical context of the image: For example, if the image was produced in 1980, explain the major events and developments at the time.  Be sure to explain how the events or developments you identify influenced the image’s message.
• Identify and explain the historical subject addressed in the image.
• Explain how the image portrays the historical subject referenced in the image: Is the image critical or praiseworthy?  Does it give a positive or negative impression?  Does it provide only one side of the story, or does it strive to offer a balanced picture?  Be sure to point to specific details in the image to support your interpretation.

• Relevant background information about the director and producers: Be sure to demonstrate how the biographical details you provide relate to the film.  For example, if the film is anti-war, you should discuss the director’s and/or producers’ political views and activities.
• The historical context of the film:  For example, if the film was released in 1980, explain the major events and developments at the time.  Be sure to explain how the events or developments you identify influenced the film’s message.
• Identify and explain the historical subject addressed in the film.
• Explain how the film portrays the historical subject referenced in the film: Is the film critical or praiseworthy?  Does it give a positive or negative impression?  Does it provide only one side of the story, or does it strive to offer a balanced picture?  Be sure to point to specific details in the image to support your interpretation.
• In one sentence, state what you think is the film’s message.
