The story, The Jade Peony, written by author Wayson Choy, explores the search for personal and national identity. Set in Chinatown, Vancouver, in the early 1940s, the story is about the lives of three young children belonging to an immigrant Chinese family. The author uses characterization and symbolism. Jung-Liang is a girl who dreams of getting out the old ways of China and becoming Shirley Temple. Jung-Sum, an adopted son, overcomes prejudice and loss through boxing but is grappling with an astounding sexual attraction. The youngest, Sekky, is a sickly child who, surprisingly, teaches the family how to grieve and get on with life. Lastly, Poh-Poh, the grandmother, and heart of the family endure heartbreaks and hardships with strength and humor in their journey to discover a new country without forgetting their common heritage…….
