Sociologists study social interactions and their effects on humans. In the case of SpaceX Starlink’s technological developments, there are concerns that the broadband connection technology that relies on ground-based systems will cause light pollution, space junk, and a possibility of affecting astronomy (Goodyer, 2019). The concerns that sociologists have are genuine, considering that the universe is the primary supporter of human life. The interaction of wavelengths of the broadband connections from earth to space and the light and sunrays’ wavelengths potentially holds dangerous consequences for human health.

Sociologists’ interests in space exploration are essential in protecting both astronauts and humankind at large. The value of the explorations and their impacts on human life should be more advantageous than the negative effects. The SpaceX Starlink project for broadband connection may be of great interest to sociologists. For example, the project aims to make broadband connections available to remote areas. However, the problems that such a connection would cause to human health due to light pollution may be irreversible. In such a case, sociologists seek to stop the explorations or demand alternatives existing to solve the problem. Sociologists as scientists, apply their knowledge and skills to determine problems and ask how the problems can have solutions. Donovan & Hoover (n.d) believe that scientists ask questions about issues and think about the solutions (pp. 3). Accordingly, it is important that sociologists are concerned about the dangers of space exploration and as exemplified by SpaceX Starling’s functionality.

Sociologists’ concerns may extend to economic issues surrounding SpaceX Starlink’s value. According to Chapter I of The Principles of Economics, sociologists may weigh the benefits to humankind against the monetary expenses of exploration and potential harm to humanity that may need compensation. The book’s author suggests that people must think like economists to ensure that humans sustainably use the available resources. Accordingly, the sociological concerns about space exploration include the use of resources. Should concerns about money and its use be an issue that sociologists give attention or economists are the only scientists who should examine it?
