Social entrepreneurship plays a critical role in addressing some of the world’s most pressing social issues, such as clean water, early childhood education, sanitation, financial stability, women’s and girls’ education, health, job skills, environmental protection, and human rights. Many of these issues figure prominently in socially and culturally diverse communities across the globe. Social entrepreneurial initiatives operate in large urban areas such as Los Angeles and in remote villages in sub-Saharan Africa and everywhere in between, often bringing life-saving innovations to the community. The support of the community and action-oriented leaders who work to sustain and promote the initiative is important to the success of programs developed in a culturally diverse environment.

You have explored the concepts of social entrepreneurship and the social entrepreneur role throughout this course. Your ideas about what makes a social entrepreneur and how this role may fit into behavioral health leadership may have evolved. Perhaps you started with a simple definition of social entrepreneur, considering the term to apply to someone who makes money but also does something socially positive. Now, your definition may have evolved to include the social entrepreneur as an agent of change, a pioneer of innovations that benefit humanity, and/or as a solution creator who works with various stakeholders to create programs that show measurable impact.
For this Discussion, you will consider your own definition of social entrepreneurship, how it has evolved, and what it means in practice. You will also explore how you personally might create and implement a plan for innovation and change.
