Morgan is a chronic alcoholic and repeatedly abuses his wife Sally. Though the police have been called several times, Sally always refuses to press charges against her husband. Imagine that you are a police officer called in by neighbors who are concerned by Morgan beating up Sally yet again. You arrive to find Sally badly bruised and bleeding, cowering in a corner. Morgan is drunk and hurling abuses at her. When you ask Sally if Morgan has been beating her, she shakes her head. Analyze the situation and write a two-page paper on the role you can play in this situation. Can you ensure Sally’s safety even if she refuses to press charges?

It is a fairly common spousal violence situation where an offender has seriously injured their spouse by inflicting physical harm on them, but when the police arrive the victim refuses to press charges. This kind of situation is usually chaotic. The victim is traumatized and scared about what might happen. While the victim does not want to be abused, they also don’t want to see their spouse get into legal trouble. Many victims of spousal violence feel a need to protect their abuser (Hines, 2005).
