1st journal (100A)

One of your relatives has decided to move to a new city. This person has decided to rent a house in an “up-and-coming” neighborhood where rents are relatively low. They’ve told you that this area seems to make the most sense based on their income from a new job. You find out that this part of the city has historically had high crime rates, has few parks, has underfunded schools, and is located near a major highway. You’re concerned about the situation because your relative has 3 young children who are 1, 3, and 5. You see each other at the holidays and start talking to each other about it. How would you approach this discussion to make sure your relative is (a) creating a situation in which these children can thrive based on your knowledge of risk and resilience and (b) making appropriate choices about moving?

Scoring: Explain risk and resilience to your relative (4 points), showing how you’d incorporate evidence from our course to give advice focused on resilience and thriving (6 points). Whether you choose to address issues of equity and social justice in your response depends on your personal interpretation of the situation. It’s not required, but it is encouraged if it seems relevant to you and you can still meet the assignment goals (see rubric). Please compose all written work in APA style.

2nd journal (100B)

NOTE: In writing your journal, you are not required to watch this show. You are only required to know enough about the show to provide informed advice based on our course content.

Your aunt just told you that your 12-year-old cousin has started watching “13 Reasons Why(Links to an external site.)” (link to Netflix, if you’re interested (Links to an external site.)). Your aunt asks you if this is appropriate and what she should do about it. How do you respond? Using evidence from our course, justify your response and explain why a 12-year-old should or should not be watching a show like this. As you justify whether this adolescent should or shouldn’t watch this show, address the following questions: (1) What is a 12-year-old’s ability to think about the content of this show? (2) How might the content of this show influence an adolescent‘s thinking and behavior? (3) What do we know about adolescent mental health that is important to consider when adolescents watch a show like this?

Scoring: State a clear response for or against watching the show (1 point) that addresses each of the 3 questions outlined above (3 points/question). See the rubric for details.
