Assignment Details: Those in the human services field have a responsibility to work with clients in a culturally competent and ethical manner. To do so, practitioners must develop sensitivity to culturally relevant research that guides practice.

The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the differences between traditional research and culturally relevant research approaches and how each addresses culture and cultural difference. What is different between these two approaches and how might these differences impact the promotion of social justice in the delivery of human services?

Throughout this course you have been working on the following components of this research project:

Week 2: Critical Thinking Assignment, worth 50 points. Submit a Research Project topic.
Week 3: Critical Thinking Assignment, worth 75 points. Draft and submit a brief proposal for your final Research Project paper.
Week 4: Critical Thinking Assignment, worth 75 points. Create an interview plan to use in Week 5.
Week 5: Critical Thinking Assignment, worth 75 points. Conduct an interview using the plan created in Week 4 and report the results.
Now it is time to bring all the pieces together in a final, comprehensive research paper.

Directions:

Identify a theory or theoretical perspective that offers insight or explanation regarding your chosen cultural group. (See the Week 2 folder, Critical Thinking Assignment, for more information about the cultural group selection.)
Apply the selected theory/theoretical perspective and conduct literature-based research that discusses, uses, or compares and contrasts traditional and culturally relevant research methods or practices.
Your literature-based research must result in five to seven scholarly sources that represent diverse authors and reflect current issues in the human services field, have been published within the past five years, and are not assigned readings in this course. (You may use the sources you generated during the Week 3 Critical Thinking Assignment. See the Week 3 folder, Critical Thinking Assignment, for more information.)

Incorporate your sources you choose into your final paper.

The body of your paper will evaluate and integrate discussion and conclusions on:
traditional vs. culturally relevant research methods or practices,
your chosen cultural group for this project, and
the information from your agency interview.
Address the following:

What is the analysis and description of traditional research you found in your research, including in your interview?
What is the analysis and description of culturally relevant research you found in your research, including in your interview?
Evaluate the key differences between traditional research and culturally relevant research and how these affect the cultural group you are exploring.
Discuss the relationship of culturally relevant research for the promotion of social justice and ethical practice for the group you are studying.
Offer conclusions drawn from your research, explaining how the culturally relevant research plays out in practice and how your research and analysis will help you make decisions about your own cultural competence.
Your research project will be a 10- to 15-page paper (this is in addition to the cover page, table of contents, and reference page that you must include). Ensure that your paper is formatted according to the CSU Global Writing Center. (Links to an external site.)

Conduct an Interview in Ethics and Cultural Competence

The agencies that handle the LBGT community and their substance abuse issues embrace social and cultural diversity. For instance, the Trans Youth Equality Foundation (TYEF) is a non-profit organization based in Portland, Maine, USA. It aims at educating and supporting children, adolescents, and families with gender non-conforming issues. This agency advocates for and protects individuals between 2 and 18-years old from social segregation. It initiates support programs that inspire positive emotions, which is integral for suicide prevention and reducing substance abuse issues. Additionally, it campaigns for policies that embrace diversity in sexual and gender orientation (TYEF, n.d.). The TYEF facilitates gender-affirming care initiatives within the home and school environments for transgender children and youth. The education, training and care programs minimize depression, anxiety, and stigmatization that would expose patients to substance abuse issues.

Interview

This interview processes, seemed to be very rushed and I was not afforded very much time to ask or speak much, but I did the best with the questions I did get answered and with a more in-depth investigation of the website. I interviewed with a director of the Trans youth equality foundation. Mrs. Susan Maasch;
How do you identify the young adults struggling with gender identity issues? A: Build trust, start by being knowledgeable about trans issues, ask them what pronoun they use or hope to use, ask them how they identify, look for clues, let the know you are an ally. Be an ally. There is also a lot of book suggestions on our website that we have our clients read and do some research.
Which approaches do you implement to manage the mental health or substance abuse issues of transgender youth? A: Get training. Try the Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference. Learn about resource that are affirming in your area. Make sure substance abuse counselors or placement are trans trained.
Which initiatives do you make towards minimizing substance abuse issues in the LGBT population? A: Fight discrimination in family and community, encourage resilience as you do for any youth, encourage their family members to be accepting if you have permission to out the youth.
Do you advocate for policies that protect the transgender population in society? A: Yes, we do this kind of advocacy. Education and advocacy. Stand with transgender people, they are your community members and sometimes your family members, friends or neighbors.

Conclusion

This interview although rushed and not a great deal of information provided, I got a bit more knowledge than I had about the foundation. This website for this foundation is very educational and provides so much information to be able to expand a person’s knowledge. They provide books, videos, legal resources, even college insights. This is available for all persons involved such as parents, educators, providers, and a person coming out. They have doctors and educators that work for them to provides all levels of care. They even offer a course on how to protest peacefully. This foundation I feel really cares about the LGBT community and has workshops, counseling services, and youth camps and these are afforded to anyone that is wanting to learn and be more educated about this community and how to help them. I feel this foundation is a great asset to the human service field and will help many on another level.
