Suppose you have been asked to design a research study that evaluates the degree of success of a family preservation program that seeks to prevent out-of-home placements of children who are at-risk of child abuse or neglect by providing intensive in-home social work services. Provide an example of when you would want to emphasize quantitative methods in your design, then provide an example of when you would want to emphasize qualitative methods in your design.

1. What would be the advantages AND disadvantages of each approach? How and why might you choose to combine both types of methods in the design?
2. Which paradigm do you prefer? Which paradigm do you think is the most useful for producing findings that can guide social work practice?
3. Formulate a hypothesis related to social work practice and identify its independent variable, dependent variable, and the attributes of each variable.
4. Examine recent issues of a social work research journal (such as Research on Social Work Practice or Social Work Research). Find one article illustrating the idiographic model of explanation and one illustrating the nomothetic model. Discuss how they illustrate the contrasting models.
