The First Crusade was the first among nine crusades that were initiated to try and capture the Holy Land of Jerusalem from the Muslim powers of Turks. The pope authorized the crusade that led to the killing of many people in Jerusalem and environs at the request of Alexius the empire of the region that had lost control to the Turks and wished to regain his land (Lovell, 2013). The First Crusade was the culmination of the Romanesque central middle ages because it led to the capture of the Eastern Christian lands that had previously belonged to the Roman Empire and led to the spreading of Christianity in the region and elimination of Muslims.

The crusade had several intentions and tensions. One of the tensions was the fact that the armies were from different parts of Western Europe and even though they shared a common belief in the Pope and Christianity, they were not unified in the fight.  For instance, a group of crusaders left earlier for the crusade despite the pope ordering them to wait. The people’s crusade was led by a preacher called Peter the Hermit. Such was insubordination and presented friction in the crusade.
