The First Definition of Piety in Plato’s Euthyphro

At Euthyphro 7a, Euthyphro makes his first attempt at a definition of piety: ‘what is dear to the gods is pious’. Socrates examines this definition at Euthyphro 7a–8b,1 and argues that it is not an acceptable definition. Explain how Socrates’ argument works. Is this a good argument against Euthyphro’s definition? Explain your answer.
