The human skeleton is so much more than just bones! It is what supports our entire body. Much like the framing of a house, the skeleton keeps the body stable and supported. The human skeleton is divided into two regions, the appendicular skeleton and the axial skeleton. “ The axial skeleton, which forms the central supporting axis of the body, includes the skull, auditory ossicles, hyoid bone, vertebral column, and thoracic cage. The appendicular skeleton includes the bones of the upper limb and the pectoral girdle and the bones of the lower limb and pelvic girdle. “ (Saladin, 2020, pg 224). The axial skeleton includes the cranial bones ( frontal bone, parietal bones, occipital bone, temporal bone, sphenoid bone, and ethmoid bone ) , facial bones ( maxillae, palatine bones, zygomatic bones, lacrimal bones, nasal bones, vomer, inferior nasal conchae, and the mandible ), auditory ossicles ( malleus, incus, and stapes ) the hyoid bone, vertebral column ( cervical vertebrae, thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, and coccyx ) as well as the thoracic cage ( ribs and sternum ). The appendicular skeleton consists of the pectoral girdle ( scapulae, and clavicles ), the upper limbs ( humerus, radius, ulna, carpal bones, metacarpal bones, and phalanges. ), the pelvic girdle ( hip bones ) and the lower limbs ( femurs, patellae, tibiae, fibulae, tarsal bones, metatarsal bones, and phalanges. ) The average adult human body has 206 bones. This is different for every person, some bones diffuse, others form from strain…among many other things. WC-254
