If you have any questions please reach out.

Required Readings for the course if you would like to pull out a few quotes from a couple of them:

(Professor’s book) Cooney, Kara, When Women Ruled the World (Washington, DC 2018)

  • Diamond, Jared, The World Until Yesterday (Penguin Books 2013)
  • Haywood, John, The Penguin Historical Atlas of Ancient Civilizations (London 2005)
  • Many other required articles and book sections are available online through the course website, with login. Some are required; some are just pertinent and interesting. I will add as the course continues.

Assignment #3: Reflections and Lessons Learned (1-2 pages) In this course you were presented with a number of foundational theories on the origins and perpetuation of gender inequality. These include, but are not limited to: • how power is defined; • the impact of geography of women’s access to power; • the effectiveness of Mann’s IEMP model for women in the ancient world (and the potential role of Sexual and Family power); • how subsistence strategy affects societal organization in regard to gender; • the degree of political centralization and how it affects women’s access and ability to hold on to power; and, • how patterns can be perpetuated/maintained as well as what causes them to be broken. Through a global survey of antiquity, we have examined how systemic gender inequality manifests in a number of soci-al systems and developed the tools necessary to analyze how and why various social systems allow some women into power more easily than others. As we end this course, your last assignment will be to reflect on lessons learned. In a one to two-page reflection, please respond to the following question: How has this course altered, shaped, or reinforced your understanding of gender inequality in your own society?
