According to my understanding of the lottery, I think the ancestors had begun the lottery in order to punish the members of the society whose conscience was driven by malice. The lottery had a way of distinguishing the bad people from the good. The lottery had some superstitious power to point out the members of the society who were malicious form the crowd. Through picking the papers from the lottery, the ancestral superstition would identify the malicious members of the society by the use of the black spotted paper…
