Going to the Play:
- Go into the play with an open mind.
- Be aware generally of the plot.
- Be honest about what you expect, and take note of how the performance deviates from what you expected.
- Make note of how lines are delivered: sarcastically, seriously, comically, in an exaggerated fashion, etc.
- What kind of effect does this produce?
- Make note of directorial decisions: blocking, special effects, lighting, and sound.
- Also make note of the type of theater space at the acting company’s disposal.
Writing about the Play
- Include the title of the play, name of the director and acting company, and venue of the play.
- Write a thesis statement.

- Include a BRIEF summary of the play. Seriously, a few sentences will do just fine.
- Write the body of the paper, in which you address each area of critique you mention in your thesis statement.
- Interpret, Analyze, and Evaluate: What happened (not just plot. You’re talking about aspects of the production, too) and why? Was it successful?
- Write your conclusion, where you defend how your evaluation of the play is legitimate and summarize your argument.
