How to Talk to Strangers: The Rhetoric of Malcolm Gladwell

BACKGROUND

In this unit, you and your group members read a nonfiction bestseller related to your major. This unit enabled you to immerse yourself in the discourse of your chosen discipline as you read not only what people in your field are writing about, but also as you examined how they communicate those ideas.

With an eye toward rhetorical analysis, you and your group members, over the course of two (2) meetings, discussed the rhetorical strategies the author chose to incorporate (and their language and tone), as well as the author’s effectiveness in communicating their argument and achieving their purpose/thesis.

YOUR TASK

This essay requires you to do rhetorical analysis, in which you identify, analyze, and evaluate the argument your book makes.

  • Identify the author’s stated or implied purpose or thesis.
  • Analyze how the author makes that argument by considering the rhetorical situation and the author’s rhetorical strategies.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the author’s rhetorical strategies and the extent to which the author is successful in achieving their purpose/thesis.

A rhetorical analysis should explore the author’s goals, the strategies used, examples of those strategies, and the effectiveness of those strategies. When writing a rhetorical analysis, you are NOT saying whether or not you agree with the argument. Instead, you’re discussing how the author makes that argument and whether or not the approach is successful.

* Keep in mind that even an argument you don’t agree with can be made well.

HOW TO DO IT

Introduction

Clearly state the book you’re analyzing. Inform your reader of the rhetorical situation: the book’s author, intended audience, topic, and the culture/context in which it was produced. All this background information should be short, concise and to the point. Your introduction should also indicate whether the author was successful in accomplishing their purpose. Narrow your focus to a few particular aspects of the text that you will discuss.

Body Paragraphs

Consider how you will organize the paragraphs. Will you discuss each strategy—every instance of ethos, then every instance of pathos, and finally every instance of logos—then end with a discussion of the overall effectiveness? Or will you review the essay in terms of the least effective strategy to the most effective? Or will you use a chronological order, discussing each strategy as it occurs sequentially?

For each paragraph, give several examples and explain how those examples illustrate the strategy being discussed. At the end of each body paragraph, make sure you connect your topic sentence back to your thesis. This creates cohesion, solidifies your argument, and provides a transition to your next topic.

Conclusion

Briefly restate your main argument. It should then apply your argument on a higher level. Why does your argument matter? What does it mean in the real world?
