First Two Loves and Vocation Assessment

Intro:

To wrap up the first two “loves” we learned about, you will be identifying themes of friendship and family in the paschal mystery narrative in John’s Gospel We’re looking in John’s Gospel because that is what the Church around the world is reading for Holy Week Liturgies this year. So, this assessment also “counts” as prayer 🙂

In philia, we’ve learned that there are three types of friendships, which include a “perfect” friendship. We’ve also learned that friendships are important in helping us discover our vocations.

In storge, we’ve learned that families are called to have three qualities: presence, receptivity, and responsibility. We’re all a part of families in some way, and we are called to show mercy to our families.

Instructions:

For this assessment, you are going to find characters in John’s Gospel from the Holy Week Readings http://usccb.org/bible/index.cfm and identify how they are examples of friendship and family, based on what we have learned so far. In particular, pay attention to the Gospel passages on April 6th http://usccb.org/bible/readings/040620.cfm , 9th http://usccb.org/bible/readings/040920.cfm10th http://usccb.org/bible/readings/041020.cfm

 , and 12th http://usccb.org/bible/readings/041220.cfm .

Choose two of the following promts to respond to, and then find characters in the Gospel readings to write about:

  1. For a chosen character, you will identify their friendship in relation to Jesus. How does the Gospel describe their friendship? Where in the Gospel of John (cite chapter(s) and verse(s)) is this description found? What type of friend would Aristotle describe him/her as?
  2. For a different chosen character, you will identify how he or she who embodies the three qualities of family according to John Paul II. How do they do this? How does the Gospel of John describe them? Where is this found in the Gospel (cite chapter(s) and verse(s)).
  3. For a different chosen character, choose a friend or a family member, and describe how they helped Jesus fulfill his vocation (saving the world) or how Jesus helped them discover their own vocation. How and where (cite chapter(s) and verse(s) is this described in the Gospel?

Format:

You can put this together however you’d like. You may simply do a written reflection, you may make a keynote with pictures as well as written answers, or you may record a video or audio. For whatever format you choose, it should be about the length/content of a thoughtful, well constructed paragraph for each character. So in total, you will submit the equivalent of two paragraphs, one for each character you chose. Please submit written answers to turnitin.com. You will need to go to the turnitin website for this, and submit to the “First Two Loves & Vocation Assessment” assignment.

Grading:

This will be worth 20 points total in Assessments/Projects

You will be assessed in three areas: Quality of output (5 pts), understanding of the elements of friendship, family, and vocation that we have gone over (10 pts), and thoughtful reflection on your two chosen Gospel Characters (5 pts).
