Discussion – Week 1

Traditional Learning Theories and Andragogy

Any study of adult learning inevitably includes the pioneering work of Malcolm Knowles. This week you learned about his theory of andragogy and also reviewed critiques of it. For this week’s Discussion, you will examine andragogy more closely and in relation to traditional learning theories.

In preparation for the Discussion this week, select one of Knowles’ six assumptions and consider why you agree or disagree with it. Then, review the traditional learning theories you read about this week and identify which of these support or contradict your position.

Post your response as follows:

  • Identify which of Knowles’ six assumptions you selected, and explain why you agree or disagree with it.
  • Based on your exploration of traditional learning theories this week, describe which of these support or contradict your position. In doing so, make a connection between andragogy and at least one traditional learning theory.

Always examine all of the Learning Resources before posting to the Discussion. Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources as well as your personal experiences and any other relevant research you find appropriate. Your posts and responses should be constructive and professional.

Course Project: Synthesis of Learning Theories

This week you have considered a number of adult learning theories and have reflected on the degree to which they support or contradict one another. Now it is time to apply what you have learned about adult learning theory to your own experiences and belief systems. Complete the following:

Synthesis (2 pages)
Consider the theories you learned about this week as they relate to your experiences as an adult learner. Which theories, or aspects of theories, resonate with you and why? Which are most applicable to the ways you learn and why? Which are least applicable and why?

For this part of the assignment, craft a description of how you learn, a process that has been shaped by the context of your life and the society in which you live. Explain which elements of the theories you learned about this week apply to you and why. Be specific, provide concrete examples, and cite your sources. If you choose, you may include a visual representation or graphic to illustrate your theory which supports the information provided in your narrative.

Reflection (1 pages)
Reflect on the synthesis that you wrote. Consider how you might apply it to help you become a more effective adult educator. In your reflection write-up, address the following:

  • How might your new understanding of adult learning theories affect your current or future work as an adult educator?
  • In what ways might you need to broaden or deepen your thinking in order to help other adults learn successfully?

Be specific and provide concrete examples. Refer to this week’s Learning Resources. You may reference other sources as well, although this is not required. Remember to use correct APA style for any citations in your work.

Note: This assignment serves as Section 1 of your Course Project: How Adults Learn. Refer to the Application/Course Project Assignment Rubric (located in the Rubrics item on the left-hand menu) to guide you.

Traditional Learning Theories and Andragogy

Knowles identified six assumptions namely need to know, prior experience, self-concept, learning orientation, readiness to learn, and motivation to learn. From the six assumptions, I agree with the self-concept assumption. Based on the self-concept assumption, adult learners tend to believe that they have the responsibility of managing their individual lives. In this regard, they expect to be seen and treated in a manner that illustrates their potential undertake specific activities by their own. In an adult learning setting, adult educators or facilitators should focus on providing a learning environment that provides adult learners with an opportunity of developing …
