Before Mark Twain began his profession of being an author, he fulfilled his childhood aspiration of being a steam boat pilot. He therefore writes about his journey on the river where he talks about how one thing he would have to do is to learn to distinguish the two views of Mississippi. The setting of the story is very essential since Mark Twain uses this to make a connection to the universal theme of the entire work. This is brought into light when he compares how he viewed the river when he had started working on the steam boats to how he felt later in his life on the exact situations that predisposed. This becomes the universal theme of the entire story therefore giving the readers the opportunity of gaining new perspectives of as they become familiarized with it.  He outlines that he would learn to distinguish between the beauty of the river and the navigational aspect of the river (Twain, 2012).  From my point of view, I believe that one of the main messages is that even though you may love something, as time goes on you loose the beauty and the innocence you had once seen in it…………………
