An Operating System (OS) is the most important software in a computer. The OS makes it possible for ‘communication’ between the user and the computer since it interprets the machine language to the language that the user can understand and the user’s language to the machine language that the computer can process. The Operating System also acts as a bridge between the software and the hardware systems of a computer in that it performs the basic tasks such as recognizing input from the keyboard, controlling peripheral devices which include printers and disk drives, sending output to display screen and the like.
