Greatest Leaders in History

History throughout the ages has recorded a multitude of individuals who have demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities, traits, characteristics, and personalities that attract followers. Not only are followers drawn to these leaders, they are influenced so strongly they are led to places they would not go on their own.

In your initial post to this discussion, identify three leaders whom you believe exemplify this description of a leader and explain why you think so. Provide a brief description for each leader and indicate the historical event that helped to define that individual as a leader. Keep in mind that leaders may not always lead or influence in a positive way, but the strengths they possess allow them to influence and lead. Note also that you may identify leaders who may not be famous but instead are very influential to you.

great leader inspires confidence in other people and moves them to action (Vocabulary.com, 2018).  According to Economy (2016), the five qualities that leaders exhibit and can contribute to their success are clarity, decisiveness, courage, passion and humility.  Three leaders whom I believe exemplify this description of a leader are Dr. Vaughn D. Tatum, Dr. Arthur M. Brazier, and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Dr. Vaughn D. Tatum is an Internal Medicine Specialist.  He was my grandmother’s former physician and is currently one of my mentors.  He graduated from Northwestern University Medical School with honors in 1976.  He exemplifies extraordinary leadership abilities and skills.  He has over 41 years of diverse experiences in private practice.  He has run at least three additional organizations outside of his private practice that have offered additional health services and informational sessions to patients as well as communities where services have been limited or inaccessible.  His characteristics are many and include honesty, confidence, commitment, positive attitude, intuition, discipline, persistence, and a sincere, caring attitude for all who encounter him.  He has the special privilege of being a leader who has power, influence, and control of the lives of many individuals.  Although Dr. Tatum is not a famous or historical leader, he has mentored and trained many to develop a passion for success and pursue their dreams.  For me, personally, he has provided examples, tools, skills, insights, and judgments that are needed for me to be successful.

Dr. Arthur M. Brazier was the retired pastor the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago’s Woodlawn community.  I was an active member of the church for over 10 years before relocating to Colorado.  Dr. Brazier was a longtime civil rights activist.  He served in World War II and received an honorable discharge.  He was also the founding president of The Woodlawn Organization, a community organization active in the civil rights movement in its early years (NBC 5 Chicago, 2010).  He was known for stirring up controversy with political, civic and business powers-that-be while seeking to transform life in and for the residents of the Woodlawn community where the church is located (“Bishop Arthur A. Brazier”, 2010).  Dr. Brazier was a fearless spiritual leader, a man with a vision and a purpose.  He made great sacrifices in Chicago and across the nation.  Here is a link to read about his legacy and reflections of his work:  http://brazierfoundation.org/legacy.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was social activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement.  Dr. King sought equality and human rights for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and all victims of injustice through peaceful protest (“Martin Luther King Jr.”, 2009).  Dr. King was a huge influence on the American society.  His accomplishments are many, and remembered for supporting the non-violent Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike, heading the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the African-American Civil Rights Movement, and his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.  He was honored by President Ronald Reagan in 1983 and a national holiday was created to celebrate all that he had done for the United States.  The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lives on today.

According to Pozin (2014), good leaders are trailblazers, making a path for others to follow, and great leaders inspire their people to reach higher, dream bigger, and achieve greater.  John Quincy Adams said it best, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” (Luttrell, 2011).
