Using information from lectures and readings, please write an essay that assesses how different or similar the Western and Eastern blocs were in their attitudes and practices with regard to sport.

Introduction

During the Cold War, the Western Bloc nations (the United States and its allies) and the Eastern Bloc nations (the Soviet Union and its sphere) were considered polar opposites. Using information from lectures and readings, please write an essay that assesses how different or similar the Western and Eastern blocs were in their attitudes and practices with regard to sport. In other words, when it came to the Olympic Games and international sport, did the leaders of the Western and Eastern bloc nations think about and use sports similarly or differently? (Note: it’s fine to make your essay mostly about the United States and the Soviet Union, but consider discussing other nations, as well, like Czechoslovakia, Great Britain, East and West Germany, and others).

Before writing, you should think about the different themes one might address in this essay. For example, you should think about the relationship between sports and propaganda in both blocs; the structure of, and the ideas behind, the sports systems in both blocs; as well as the athletes that these blocs did or did not support. Your thoughts on these themes will provide the building blocks for your larger, overall argument.

A little more specifically…

An outstanding essay (1) will have a clearly stated thesis statement (i.e. your argument) that explicitly answers the question; (2) it will support that argument with specific evidence and examples from lectures and readings— relevant readings include the textbook, the Erin Elizabeth Redihan essay on Helsinki 1952, the documents assigned for the two Rome 1960 document workshops, and, especially, Rome 1960; and (3) it will present counter-evidence—that is, it will include at least one paragraph in which you explore how one might answer the question counter to the way you are, but then explain why your interpretation is more compelling.

Formatting Guidelines: Your essay should be 5 pages in length. Your essay must be typed, double-spaced, use 12-point font (we suggest Times New Roman), and have one-inch margins. Give your essay a title—though no title pages please.

In the upper-left corner of your essay, include three single-spaced lines with: (1) your name; (2) the class number; and (3) the date you are turning in the essay.

Make sure your essay has page numbers.

Please use Chicago/Turabian style footnotes in your essay. Please remember to consult the Footnote Guide on Sakai to help you with the formatting. If you have questions beyond that, come and see me or your Teaching Assistant (again, you do not need to footnote information that comes from lecture).
