It means that the right action is one that maximizes the happiness of the highest number of people. Utilitarianism defends this notion even if it means violating the inalienable rights of a person that is, those that can neither be surrendered nor transferred to another person. LeGuin, Ursula in the “The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas” gives an insight into the significance of the right to happiness, and how the process of achieving it can compromise that of others. In the city of Omelas, everyone seems to be happy except for few people like the young boy. In this case, utilitarianism agrees with sacrificing the boy for the happiness of the townspeople………
