Paper No. 3 (due April 13) Length: 750 words (1) Go to “John Cage 4’33” by David Tudor” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HypmW4Yd7SY. Attentively watch the entire video including Tudor’s brief comment at the end. If you omit any part of the video, you will miss important information. Make a note of everything you hear while watching the video. (2) Now ask five (5) persons not enrolled in this class to watch two minutes of this video. Take note of their comments and reactions, body language, and comfort level. Avoid giving information about your experience before your five participants sample the video. (3) Create a table showing the results for the five persons polled. (4) Explain your reaction to the tabulated results, and discuss how the five responses compare/contrast with your own, e.g., what thoughts came to mind as you watched the video, and at what timing did you experience a change, if any, in your reaction? (5) Summarize the experience in the light of Cage’s intent versus your perception. You might want to visit the Free Dictionary first and read the short definition of Yijing (sometimes given as I Ching). Cage had become interested in Yijing, which is believed to have influenced some of his compositions.
