Objectives: For this assignment, we will evaluate arguments for their persuasive appeals about how culture dictates identity based on prescribed codes/behaviors.
Prompt: Using at least 3 sources from the texts we’ve read and discussed in class for unit 2, center an argument and thesis based on the question below:
How well do these texts illustrate how popular culture shapes our identity through prescribed codes based on who/what we are (e.g. race, class, gender, sexuality, etc.)?
- For this assignment, you will select 3 texts from our assigned readings that speak to a similar aspect of an identity, such as gender, sexuality, race, social class, age, etc.
- Identify the authors’ arguments and their purposes (to inform, to take action, to change one’s belief).
- Describe the prescribed codes the authors explore in their texts that dictate our identity and behavior.
- Locate at least 3 rhetorical moves the authors are using to appeal to their audience.
- As you evaluate the effects of the authors’ rhetorical choices have on their audiences, be sure to explainhow that rhetorical strategy serves their purpose.
- Offer a brief personal reaction to the arguments.
Directions: This essay will follow the general structure of an introduction with a clearly stated thesis statement, body, and conclusion. When citing the authors from the textbook, be sure to adequately introduce the text(s) you will be using to support your points by author’s full name, title of work in quotations, and a brief summary of the text as it relates to the quoted passage. Use proper in-text citations for textual support and format the essay using MLA guidelines that includes a works cited page for all borrowed material.
