Notably, Australia is one of the driest continents globally as reports estimate a long-time mean of 460mm of rain annually between 1960 and 2001. This findings highlight that Australia is among the last hundred nations globally with lower levels of rainfall.  Primarily, this is due to the lack of freshwater reservoirs such as the lakes whereby their water supply mainly depends on rivers concentrated in the coastal regions. To maintain a steady supply, the country depends on precipitation levels. Additionally, groundwater is scarce, especially during the drought conditions. The country has in the past experience drought conditions which has affected its ability to access enough water supply. The Australian government implemented the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme part of a drought response plan to mitigate the impact of the Millennium drought, the worst drought that had been recorded in the region. Despite this, 10 years have passed since the completion of the project with no droughts recorded.
